Turn an antique clawfoot table into a coffee table - Simple DIY!

So I hope you won't hate me for this, but I cut the base of a clawfoot table. I know this will be controversial. Lets preface this and say, I also saved the table from the landfill and now it looks like it was made to be a coffee table! The top of this table had wear, tear and water damage that has left the top of it a little warped, cracked and in my opinion BEAUTIFUL. Not useful for a dining table though, for that you need all spaces to be flat so your fork doesn't try to run away from you. However, it's perfect for a natural worn coffee table!

What you need for this DIY:
  1. Circle Saw
  2. Clawfoot Table
  3.  80,120,220 Grit sandpaper (Optional)
  4. White wash stain (Optional)
We measured our current coffee table to be 18" tall, so we cut the current leg at the closest mark that made sense for the design that's on the leg.

It was easiest to do it in one of the indents of the design. Because this was a level mark around the whole leg we didn't have to do any marking. We just followed that indent on the leg the full length around with our Circle Saw. I also will note our leg was hollow, it wasn't solid wood, which made this easier.

This was super simple and took like 10 minutes to cut! The harder part was sanding and white washing the table top!

If you want to see how I achieved this look go view my highlight HERE on my Instagram where I saved the stories of me finishing the top, cutting the base and painting the legs.

Also to note: we do not have the leaf for this table, I am assuming it was ruined and tossed at some point, so we used flat brackets underneath the table to keep the 2 sliding pieced together!

  1. Beautiful! I am wondering what is the diameter of your coffee table? I have one like it and am thinking about converting it. Thanks!

  2. How did you reattach the top after cutting the base? I am about to start the same project and I am not sure how I want to attach the table top to the base.
